Report
Cards Comments for this time of year: One focus for everyone
each reporting period. reading aloud math facts speed quality of
work organization neatness time on task consistent quality
consistent performance consistent behavior Another focus on an individual
basis for improvement. Give compliments on Academic effort and improvement.
Discuss with the class: Many will find----comment on their
report card. What does this mean? What do you need to do to improve in
this area?
Your student's understanding of what you expect of them and what
they, as students, are accountable for, is very important.
Make a copy of the report card for each student. Go over each subject
and list your expectations for an A, B, C, F. Show them papers that are
worthy of an A, B, or C. Have students fill out the report card with the grades
they think they will have. Have them write on the back of the page: (Teacher)
will say I am good in / at (Teacher) will say I need to improve in (Teacher)
will say I need to-----more Have a conference with each student to discuss
these. Ask teachers at your school how they grade and what parents expect.
Check cums for pertinent information. Ask last year's teacher for insights.
Check standardized test scores. Look at past report cards. Be prepared
if your grades are not as high... Have examples with the name cut off.
This is an A paper / a B paper This is your child's paper. Have LOTS
of work saved to show parents if the grades are not as might be expected. Have
specific suggestions to help at home. Comments
on the Report Card Always start with something that is good
Johnny is always smiling / polite / tries his best Mary's work is neat / organized
/ completed on time Then comment on one thing that needs to be improved
and give a specific activity to do that will help. Peter needs to improve
in multiplication. This can be done by studying his facts every night.
Too many things to improve result in nothing being done. Keep your vocabulary
simple, direct, and no educational jargon! A MUST: Teachers'
Messages for Report Cards.. ISBN-0-8224-6770-4.....an
indispensable little book that offers multiple ways to comment on children....average,
slow, behavior problems, attitudes, skills,etc..
