Math
A big problem in Math testing is the inability to transfer
numbers accurately. Give students many, many opportunities to do this. Have
students copy numbers (problems, lists of numbers, information containg numbers,
etc.) from: *the chalkboard *the overhead projector *books *Math
books *another piece of paper Have students work on scratch paper and
then transfer the numbers correctly to another paper.
Test Rules 1. If you aren't
sure of the answer, replaced the underlined word with each answer
choice and say the phrase to yourself. 2. Remember what you are looking
for: antonyms mean the answer that mean the opposite synonyms are
the same 3. Stay with your first choice. It is usually right.
Change it only if you are sure another is better. If a question seems confusing,
try restating it to yourself in simpler terms. 4. Read the questions FIRST
then story.. 5. If you are not sure which answer is correct, take you
best guess 6. Listen carefully to the directions! 7.
Read each question carefully. Look for key words and numbers
that will help you find the answer. Look at any reference materials that are part
of the question. Then look at all the answer choices. 8.
Think about what the question is asking before you choose an answer.
9. When you are not sure of an answer, eliminate the choices you know
are wrong, then take your best guess. 10. If you have time go over
all the test again.
Test Taking Skills How to take a test
is a learned skill. One that we often forget to teach. First, students
need to learn the techniques in choosing the correct answers. Read
the question carefully. Be sure that you do not skip words. Think!
Does it make sense? Read the answer choices. Then reread the
question. Look for clue words/phrases in the questions. Choose
your answer. Check your answer choice with question clues. Not
sure?? Take an educated guess: Eliminate the wrong answers.
Still no clue? Mark question lightly with your best educated guess
and return later to try again. Second, we need to train them
to work for long periods of time. During testing, all of a sudden, we
expect students to sit and concentrate for long periods of time. This is
a developed skill. Students need to increase their ability to work for long periods
of sustained, silent, independent, individual work/test time. Too often,
we expect students who have done only short assignments or worked for short periods
of time to do 45-90 minutes of testing. They get restless. They lose concentration.
They give up. They just put marks on the paper. Start to train them in
this skill NOW. Next
