When authors write, they often include context clues to the meaning of words they use. The context clue is usually presented in the sentence or paragraph in which the word occurs. There are six types of context clues.

1. Definition context clue.
The author includes a definition to help the reader understand the meaning of a word.
2. Synonym context clue.
The author includes a synonym to help the reader understand the meaning of a word.
3. Antonym context clue.
The author includes an antonym to help the reader understand the meaning of a word.
4. Description context clue.
The author includes one or more descriptions to help the reader understand the meaning of a word.
5. Summary context clue.
The author makes a number of statements that help the reader understand the meaning of a word.
6. Visual context clue.
The author includes a picture, drawing, chart, graph, or other type of visual to help the reader understand the meaning of a word.

ENGLISH IS TOUGH STUFF

River, rival, tomb, bomb, comb, Doll and roll and some and home. Stranger does not rhyme with anger, Neither does devour with clangour. Souls but foul, haunt but aunt, Font, front, wont, want, grand, and grant, Shoes, goes, does. Now first say finger, And then singer, ginger, linger, Real, zeal, mauve, gauze, gouge and gauge, Marriage, foliage, mirage, and age.
Query does not rhyme with very, Nor does fury sound like bury. Dost, lost, post and doth, cloth, loth. Job, nob, bosom, transom, oath. Though the differences seem little, We say actual but victual. Refer does not rhyme with deafer. Foeffer does, and zephyr, heifer. Mint, pint, senate and sedate; Dull, bull, and George ate late. Scenic, Arabic, Pacific, Science, conscience, scientific. Liberty, library, heave and heaven, Rachel, ache, moustache, eleven.
We say hallowed, but allowed, People, leopard, towed, but vowed. Mark the differences, moreover, Between mover, cover, clover; Leeches, breeches, wise, precise, Chalice, but police and lice; Camel, constable, unstable, Principle, disciple, label. Petal, panel, and canal, Wait, surprise, plait, promise, pal. Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair, Senator, spectator, mayor. Tour, but our and succour, four. Gas, alas, and Arkansas. Sea, idea, Korea, area, Psalm, Maria, but malaria. Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean. Doctrine, turpentine, marine.
Compare alien with Italian, Dandelion and battalion. Sally with ally, yea, ye, Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, and key. Say aver, but ever, fever, Neither, leisure, skein, deceiver. Heron, granary, canary. Crevice and device and aerie. Face, but preface, not efface. Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass. Large, but target, gin, give, verging, Ought, out, joust and scour, scourging. Ear, but earn and wear and tear
Do not rhyme with here but ere. Seven is right, but so is even, Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen, Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk, Ask, grasp, wasp, and cork and work. Pronunciation -- think of Psyche! Is a paling stout and spikey?
Won't it make you lose your wits, Writing groats and saying grits? It's a dark abyss or tunnel: Strewn with stones, stowed, solace, gunwale, Islington and Isle of Wight, Housewife, verdict and indict. Finally, which rhymes with enough -- Though, through, plough, or dough, or cough? Hiccough has the sound of cup. My advice is to give up!!!

Increase Vocabulary

Each synonym has a slight difference of meaning. Have students write a sentence for each showing meaning.

Parts of Speech
Start the day with the following parts of speech recognition activity: Write several sentences on sentence strips, one for each table or group. Cut each sentence into separate words and have them ready in a pile for each group before your kids come to class. Have directions on the board for your students to form the words into a sentence and then to separate words according to parts of speech (i.e. noun, adjective, verb, etc.). You may want to have them put a different color mark on the cards corresponding to the part of speech.

Unscramble the Words
Make copies of this Word Jumble for your kids. They must unscramble the letters to get the words and then place the numbered letters in the boxes to form the final answer.

MadLibs
Give your students the chance to have fun while practicing parts of speech. Using a Madlib book, retype the text of one of the excerpts for best results, or just make copies of it. List the parts of speech on an overhead transparency that correlate to those needed to complete the Madlib. Have your students come up with the parts of speech. When thay are finished they can get a copy of the story and fill it in. Your kids will have a great time sharing these with each other.

Words in a Word
Using this reproducible, write a long word that you have been studying in the line provided. Make enough copies of these for your class. Have your students find as many words as they can within that word. You can make a rule that the words have to be atleast 3 letters long for more practised students.

What's In a Name?
Have your kids find as many words as they can within their own first, middle, and last names.

Rhyming Words
Have your students think of as many words as possible that rhyme with "at." Or, choose any word you prefer.

Word Jumble
Bring in the Daily Jumble from your local newspaper as a quick way to get the day started. This is also a good way to build vocabulary skills.

How many words can you make out of the word MILLENNIUM?

Opposites Attract
Create several 6x6 grids on paper. Write antonyms on the cards. You'll need 16 sets of words. Cut these out and your students can play an opposite matching game.

Verb Hunt
Have your students make a list of as many verbs that they can find around the classroom. This is a great activity when students are just beginning to learn about verbs and other parts of sentences. You could also have them separate the different type of verbs (helping, action, past, present, etc).

Cloze Procedure
Find an interesting short story from a magazine, or type up the content of a short children's book. Form into a transparency. Cover several of the words, and have students guess what the words are. They may not get the exact words, but they should be able to pick words that make sense. This is called the Cloze procedure. It can test your students ability to use syntactic, semantic(meaning), or schematic clues depending on the words you choose.

Context Clues
Have a few sentences written on the board that contain new vocabulary words of which your students must deduce the meaning using context clues. Here are some examples:
My friend John missed the bus the other day, so I told him I'd give him a ride home on my handlebars. But Mrs. Smith, our teacher, said that it was a precarious situation and it would be better if we both walked home.
Rachel's parents wanted her to join the GATE program at school, but she wasn't very zealous about the idea because she wanted to stay with all of her friends at school.
Being one of the most expensive and gallant ships ever built, the Titanic set out for its maiden voyage to the United States in splendor.

Boggle
Make a 5x5 grid on the chalkboard using either using a Boggle game set or by simply generating letters yourself. Have the following directions listed next to the game board so students can start as soon as they enter the room: Make as many words as you can using the game board. Start with any letter on the board to make your word. Letters in the word must touch each other. You may not use the same letter space twice in the same word. Each word must have a minimum of three letters. Have fun!
