A FUN FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS CLASS ACTIVITY

For this activity, each student is given a direction. The numbers should not accompany the directions for obvious reasons. I have found it best to print the directions out on standard paper, laminate the papers, then cut the directions out one by one into small card size. Students should stand up and follow the direction on their card when prompted to do so. Urge students to listen carefully. The main idea here is to follow the directions.
1. When the teacher says “Good Morning”, stand up and say, “My name is Alvin”.
2. When someone stands up and says “My name is Alvin”, stand up and say, “No, it’s not.”
3. When someone stands up and says, “No it’s not”, cough 3 times.
4. When someone coughs 3 times, go to the board and write the word SWAYS on the board.
5. When someone writes the word SWAYS on the board, get up and walk around your desk 3 times.
6. When someone gets up and walks around their desk 3 times, say “Please sit down”.
7. When someone says “Please sit down”, get up and turn off the lights.
8. When someone turns off the lights, go to the board and write the word STOP under the word SWAY.
9. When someone writes the word STOP on the board, turn the lights on. 10. When someone turns the lights on, clap your hands twice.
11. When someone claps their hands twice, say, “We need to open a window in here.”
12. When someone says “We need to open a window in here”, go open a window.
13. When someone opens a window, go to the board and write the word GONE under the word STOP.
14. When someone writes the word GONE on the board, say “It’s awfully cold in here.”
15. When someone says “It’s awfully cold in here”, go shut the window.
16. When someone shuts the window, go to the board and erase all of the S’s from all of the words on the board.
17. When someone erases all of the S’s on the board, stand up and say, “We forgot to pledge the Flag!”
18. When someone stands and says, “We forgot to pledge the flag”, go to the phone, pick it up, look at the class, and say “I’m sorry, there’s no one here.”
19. When someone says, “I’m sorry, there’s no one here.”, go to the board and erase the E from the word GONE.
20. When someone erases the E from the word GONE on the board, stand up and snap your fingers 3 times.
21. When someone stands and snaps their fingers 3 times, go to the window blinds and raise one, then lower it again.
22. When someone raises and lowers the blind, stand and say, “Will you please make up your mind?”
23. When someone says “Will you please make up your mind?”, say, “Okay, I’ll have a cheeseburger.”
24. When someone says, “Okay, I’ll have a cheeseburger”, say, “Would you like fries and a shake with that?”
25. When someone says, “Would you like fries and a shake with that?”, walk over to the teacher and skip around her twice.
26. When someone skips around the teacher, bark like a dog.
27. When someone barks like a dog, stand up and say, “I’m the King of the World!”
28. When someone stands and says, “I’m the King of the World!” stand up and say, “Iceberg, dead ahead!”
29. When someone stands and says, “Iceberg, dead ahead!”, make a sound like a car horn honking.
30. When someone makes a sound like a car horn honking, stand up and stomp your feet.
31. When someone stands up and stomps their feet, go to the classroom library, pick a book from the shelf and begin to read silently.
32. When someone goes to the classroom library and begins to read a book, say, “You’re holding that book upside down.”
. When someone says, “You’re holding that book upside down”, go back and lead the reader back to his/her seat.
34. When someone leads a student back to their seat, stand up and say, “Aren’t we done yet?”
35. When someone says, “Aren’t we done yet?” go to the board and erase the P and the N, add an exclamation point after the last word, and bow to the class.

REMEMBERING DIRECTIONS

Choose a drawing or simple art project at first. Give the directions before recess or lunch. Warn them that they need to remember them. When return have students write down the directions and then follow them. NO TALKING. NO QUESTIONS. After the appropriate time has past, share activity and discuss difficulties.

Listening to Directions
Teach students to:
*Listen
*Repeat to yourself
*Draw a sketch
*Picture in your mind
*Closing your eyes sometimes helps to remember the directions

Teach your students to follow directions.
This is a skill that needs to be taught!

Get highlighters (or use thick yellow markers) for each student. ALWAYS have them highlight the clue words in the written directions.
Tell them:
to picture in their heads what they are to do
to say to themselves in their own words what they are to do
to write the directions in their own words

Begin a Think Before You Do campaign.
Give an assignment to be done in thin black marker. An art lesson is a good way to start. Say (for one idea) draw a city scene with a stop sign, a tall building, and a car. Have students plan the assignment in their head before beginning.
Tell students they get one paper. No second chance do over or get another paper. They need to listen carefully to the directions and then
Think Before You Do as there are NO second chances.

If mistakes are made have them cross out the mistake or figure out a way to fix it. Keep the assignments in a file so progress can be seen.

When you give directions:

* Use Verbs
* Keep it sequential 1-2-3
* Keep it SHORT
* Be clear

After you have given directions:
*ask 5-8 students to repeat the directions
*have students whisper the directions to their neighbor:
in front /behind /on the right /on the left
*have students write the directions and read aloud to the class / discuss accuracy

*Think! before you do anything
*Have a 5 minute start period when NO questions may be asked
*then have a 2 minute period during which you MAY answer questions of value
*everyone stops and listens during this time
* when a question is asked, you ask the class
" How many know the answer ? "
If the majority of the class raise their hands indicating that they know (therefore the directions were already given), say to the inquiring student:
"Maybe someone will be nice and tell you what you are to do."
*After a few days students learn very quickly to listen to the directions when given!
