In
handing out progress reports you should be including specifics on what
needs to be done to improve the grades. Comments like Better test scores doesn't
cut it!! Be specific!! A conference with student and parents is necessary!!
A=Excellence -90-100% -few students will meet this criteria B=Very Good
and that should be anyone doing all the work well 80-89%
C=on grade level doing satisfactory work-70-79% F=not trying, poor behavior
If a student is failing everything and truly trying then look at the first grade
and the last grade and if there is progress a C- with the comment progressing
but below standards would be appropriate. Keep several sets of grades:
Test Scores-graded Homework- record only a checkmark if
the homework is NOT handed in Projects-can be the equivalent of a
test-graded Daily Work-includes class participation, oral participation,
class written work-a minus, check, plus symbol can be used for poor, satisfactory,
outstanding
Academics vs Sports /Extra Curricular Activities
This is an ongoing
controversy...two points to consider- School is first for academic learning.
Joe Paterno revered, successful, longtime football coach at Penn State PA first
requires of his players success academically, then football proficiency.
It is not easy. It produces a lot of flack. Be strong. Site state requirements,
expectations nationally, even say-if your student doesn't learn the skills needed
to be promoted/ to do the work next year/ to be promoted to eighth grade/ high
school - sports skills alone won't get them into college/trade school, etc
In general comments need to be: *Simple-NO EDucatese *Set 1 or
2 goals for improvement *Find ONE positive comment about the child. Too many
harsh negatives defeat the student and the parent is overwhelmed or turns off
and NOTHING is Accomplished.
