Class Management
refers to the procedures and routines
that are used to keep the daily business of the classroom running smoothly.

Be consistent. Be consistent. Be consistent.

Do you want each of your students to have his/her own personal white board to use in class? It is a great way for all to participate and an easy way for you to monitor all students when doing group exercises!
One of the cheapest ways to obtain these handy items is to go to your local hardware store and buy a sheet of white shower board. Then ask the attendant there who is in charge of cutting materials to cut you approximately 12"X12" squares from the board. You can get approximately 30 boards from just one sheet of shower board! It works great!

Keep all students actively involved in every lesson!!
For example, while a student does a presentation, involve the other students in taking notes or evaluating it.

Any suggestions on how to help extremely disorganized students??

There are so many like this.
If they don't learn the organizational skills, they will always have problems- in school, in jobs, and in their lives. Explain to the class that learning to be organized is a skill that is learned AND it is important.
Do ONE thing at a time.
First, empty the desk of everything.
Have one place for materials-in a box, an a shelf, even on the floor.

There is something about dealing with One thing at a time and standing, walking, clearly seeing, returning to a desk that makes an impression.
Slowly return items to desk. Monitor carefully and remove them if it becomes disorganized.

Use construction paper to make folders to hold papers/work...red for Math, green for Science, etc.

Set 1-3 items that are permitted in the backpack. Check backpacks
daily at the beginning and the end of the day.

A student partner can help with monitoring all of this.

Use proximity control...be nearby....WALK up and down the rows, around the room, around the groups. STAND next to the restless.

Quietly finger tap the desk of any who are NOT paying attention....whisper their name.

Use student names in discussion. Use student names in examples or problems...Tom went to the store with $4......

Be sure to mention...
Mary is ready, Tom's group is ready to go on, Mike's table is listening....
OR..
one person is ready, 2 rows are listening, almost everyone is ready to go on

Please tell your neighbor to listen...

Discipline
....a spoonful of sugar....
Call two parents a day for the next month.
Try to have something of improvement / progress to say about each child.

I just wanted to tell you that Susie handed in the neatest paper she's
done this year.
Tuan helped to welcome a new student to our class today.
Tom asked a very good question in Science today. It really showed that he was interested in ....
Maria was so helpful in cleaning up after the Art lesson today.
Jimmy did all his assignments today and I wanted you to know.
It is amazing the positive results this gets.

Remember!
I
f you ask,
"Does anyone have any questions?"
and you get no questions- that means students
probably don't know
or understand enough to ask a question!!
So, ask questions that will tell you if there is understanding. Just remember though that just because one student gives the answer it does NOT mean anyone else knows the answer.
Ask more than one student to give the answer to the same question...
Tell me more.
Say it in a different way.
How would you say it?
Say it again.
Then ask the question in a different way and check for understanding.

Classroom management
is facilitated by good planning and a fast pace.

ALWAYS have at least 2 or 3 back-up activities prepared.

If students need a pencil, lend small, yucky pencils!

Giving individual / small group help ...efficiently!!

When doing seat work assignments, if students need help have them write their name on the board with the page # and problem /question # . Tell them then to go on to the next one.

Then when 5 minutes or so have passed, you can say....All those that need help with page# problem/question# come to the table for help.

When collecting papers, train students to pass right side up and put their paper ON TOP so there is a consistant order to papers.

For easier correcting...

Train students to flod the right side of papers to create an ANSWER column on papers...especially for math
